A Brief History of The Summers County Planning Commission (By: Rick Moorefield)

The Summers County Planning Commission was formed by an ordinance that established it on November 12, 2003.  The Planning Commission consists of eleven members appointed by the County Commission.  Its membership includes representation from each of the three geographic districts of the county along with representation from business, industry, farming, and labor.  Additionally, one member of the Summers County Commission also serves on the Planning Commission.  Members now serve without compensation for three year terms and may be reappointed.
The Planning Commission was organized in accordance with Chapter 8, Article 24, Section 1 of the West Virginia Code in order to improve the present health, safety, convenience, and welfare of the citizens of Summers County by planning ahead to meet the needs of the future.   Thus, its primary goal is to create a comprehensive land use management plan for those unincorporated areas of Summers County.  The Planning Commission meets quarterly on the first Monday of the quarter and is supported by the County’s WVU Extension community and economic development agent.
The original By-Laws of the Summers County Planning Commission were adopted on July 16, 2005.  The By-Laws address typical issues such as terms of office, duties of officers, meeting times, and determination of a quorum for business.
They have since been modified on March 7, 2007, and January 5, 2009 to address various issues related to membership on the Commission and meeting dates.
